     Service. Here's a word that is  undergoing major reconstruction. Some would have you believe that because you have access to a phone message system at all hours - 24/7 as it is referred in modern parlance - you are better off than when you had to call during  normal "business hours." Somehow, being able to call your insurance agent at two in the morning is a necessity. We are confusing this with access.

     Real service goes beyond an elaborate phone mail system that allows you to deposit information at all hours. Marketers of  "on-line" insurance have very successfully shifted the burden of responsibility to the consumer by trading convenient hours with true service. The consumer not only has to endure a complicated series of "option menus" to navigate, but must become an expert on the products and services provided because the person (or more increasingly, machine) on the other end is only there to record your request. Try deviating from the option menus and you will know what I mean. This may be fine for bubble gum and baseball cards, but not when it comes to ensuring your life, health, home, and automobile.
